What is the literal meaning of "Benjarong" ?
The Largest porcelain production centres in Thailand are in Lampang and Samut Sakhon. Thai craftsmen produce some of the most attractive handmade blue and white porcelain, Benjarong and Lai nam thong for export worldwide. Benjarong, literally means "five colours", is a Thai name given to particular type of porcelain decorated in enamel of various colours. Lai nam thong is also decorated in several colours, but more importantly in gold, which heightens the brilliance of the colours - and also the cost. The potter forms the mixture of refined kaolin and clay on a wheel into the desired shape and size. The pottery is then left to dry for about two days before undergoing the first firing at 700 ํC for about four hours. When the pottery cools down, an artisan hand-paints designs using special coluurs. Cobalt mixed with water is used in the blue and white variety. The painted porcelain is then dipped in a porcelain glaze and put into oven for the second firing at 1300 ํC for about 18 hours. The blue and white porcelain is now finished. For Benjarong and Lai nam tong, the designs and colours are painted after the glazed porcelain has been fired. The items are then glazed fired again.
