The burning of coal, oil and wood has an effect on the composition of the atmosphere. Burning uses up oxygen from air and releases carbon dioxide. Certain widely used chemicals release chlorine into the upper atmosphere. Chlorine reacts with the ozone, breaking it down. Many processes and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxides. CFCs also disrupt the ozone layer. The Sun’s rays pass through the atmosphere and warm the Earth in the normal way, but the excess heat is absorbed by greenhouse gases and gives rise to what is known as the “greenhouse effect”. World temperatures could increase 4 ํC by the middle of the next century. This does not seem like much, but it is enough to alter our climate considerably, bringing about melting of polar ice caps and widespread flooding worldwide.
Carbon dioxide, methane, CFCs, etc.
